I experimented to find the best onion bhajia recipe and this combination is just delicious! I've made it so many times as it's so easy and my family just loves them! I hope you enjoy these as much as we do!

Onion Bhajia Recipe Prep Time: 20 minutes (Approx)

Makes 15-20 Onions Bhajias

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Large Onion (about 220g), Sliced Fairly Thin

  • 1/2 Cup (60g) Chickpea Flour

  • 2 TBSP Coarse Semolina

  • 2 tsp Rice Flour

  • 1/2 tsp Salt

  • 1/2 tsp Coriander-Cumin Powder

  • 1/2 tsp Red Chilis Powder

  • Pinch of Garam Masala (optional)

  • 2/3 Cup (150ml) Cold Tap Water

  • 2 TBPS Chopped Coriander

  • 1-2 tsp Hot Oil From Frying

  • Oil for Deep Frying

METHOD:

Slice the onion into fairly thin slices. If the length is too long, cut it in half.

Make the batter by mixing all the ingredients in a large bowl. Let it sit for a minute.

Meanwhile, heat up the oil in a pot and get a tray ready lined with newspaper and paper towels.

Then add the sliced onions to the batter. Make sure the consistency is as you like it. I like my batter thin so it just coats my onions.

Add 1-2 tsp hot oil to the batter & onion mix and mix with a spoon.

Before frying, make sure the oil is quite hot, otherwise the onion bhajias may become greasy.

Place small amounts (about 1 TBSP) of the onion mix into the hot oil and fry until nice and crisp. Make sure you clump the onions together when dropping them into the oil.

Remove to a tray lined with paper towels.

Enjoy hot with fresh tomato chutney.

Note: Save the oil in a container after sieving it. You'll want to make these again and can use this same oil for them!
